Comments:All memories of the 70s 80s are a bit blurred now, I was on for Fleetmain, Ukon Trucking, DJ International then last few years with M&S Shipping. Varied continental work with a few M/E thrown in. . Odd really I lived 5 miles from Astrans but never applied for a job. . Brilliant site lots of old picckies you have remembering them still.

Comments:I remember the day I took an Astran trailer to Dover, although at the beginning of Folkstone hill the drive Half shaft broke. After ringing you Dave and yourself came all the way down to undone a few bolts, few taps of a sledge hammer out with the old, another one out of the van, bolt back up. OK off you go to the docks and see you back at the yard. Drop the trailer in Dover and bob - tailed back

Really appreciate your kind comments: I suppose because I had been a driver, I knew the things that got up my nose, and tried to steer clear: a company is only as good as the people who work for it, and it needs to be enjoyable for everyone. Comments:I have just revisited this site and it is great to read about the drivers and jobs you were involved with. I have crossed paths with you three times. I did a couple of "trips" for Bob May with the Helmut Haid trailer. I met Helmut and Anita in Graz, and they were just as you say, lovely people. I also loaded talcum powder from Amsterdam while working for Elvex from Vlardingen and eventually got to meet Suzie. I remember the instructions on the office door about calling her name and making a noise before stroking her. What a lovely dog she was. Great Photos Mike, great site and the same way I entered haulage was with a company just like yours. Cheers for now...

Comments:Hi Lee, thanks for getting back to me, and glad you liked the site. I am pleased you have happy memories of us at Paddock Wood. As most of us were ex drivers, we remembered only too well waiting for no reason for hours and days, and we resolved that we would always do our best to get drivers turned around quickly. The old Scania shunter had a very chequered history, and I have a picture of me and it being recovered off the M10 by Addington recovery's 110, which also had an interesting history, so I am putting together a page detailing the two's history. Rgds Mike PS: your email address didn't work

Comments:Hi Mike I must say that your website is the best trucking read I have had for ages, I started reading straight off the monitor but decided this needs more time to get the best out of it - so I printed it off - feet up on the settee and thoroughly enjoyed it. You've certainly had a busy life and you had the forethought to take some photographs which most people don't do and regret it. I must admit my driving life was not as interesting as yours, I started off on tippers, Ford Traders in the mid '60s, drove D series tippers and a D1000 8 pot Cummins which was some truck. After a spell working inside I returned to quarry work with Tilcon at Ballidon driving first a S36 8wheeler then an S50 30t half cab. After a while I wanted to get onto artics so went driving for Mr Kipling Cakes driving Seddon 32/4s and some D series Fords, we also had Volvo F88s on hire. Stayed there for 14 years or so progressing from driver to traffic supervisor to shift manager over transport and warehousing,

Comments:Hello mate. I came across your website and the excellent pic of the tippers waiting to load tarmac and was wondering if you have any others ? I have quite a few ARC tipper pics and I was wondering if you'd like a few of what I have ? The old pics are the best ones I'm sure you'll agree. Kelvin.

Comments:Just hazarding a guess: the first F10s were roadtested in 1977, with CM and MT reporting that you had to have the windows open to hear the engines. Our first F88, bought in 1980 from Ken Topham, a timber haulier, was ex Reeds and N reg, 1975, so I suspect F88s ran from early 70's to 1978. drop me an email: do I know you? don't be shy. Mike
